Chiang Kai Shiek was more concerned about getting rid the Communist than the Japanese as he saw the Communist as a bigger threat. Hence, even though he agreeed on the setting up of the Second United Front, he did not commit all his troops in fighting the Japanese as he planned to reserve energy for later on battles with the Ccp. As such, the Nationalists became unpopular among the peasants as they saw the Nationalist's approach as insincere and unkeen about driving the Japanese out of China. Furthermore, the KMT troops were overstretched and this prevented them from succeeding in any military action.
